Benefits of Retinol

December 15, 2015

No matter what you build in life, you always need to start with a strong foundation. This axiom is no less true in the anti-aging skincare world, because any great anti-aging regimen should build on the same great foundation: Retinol. Let’s review how retinols benefit the skin.

Retinol is a topical form of vitamin A. When applied to the skin, retinols have been clinically proven to provide a variety of significant anti-aging benefits. Retinols :

  • Stimulate collagen production and boost cellular turnover
  • Help diminish pigmentation
  • Improve the skin’s elasticity
  • Enhance the overall texture, tone and resiliency of the skin
  • Diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Lessen the occurrence of acne breakouts & blackheads

How do Retinols work?

Retinols encourage skin cells to reproduce more rapidly, the way they used to when we were younger. For over 30 years, medical grade retinol products have been proven to be the most effective anti-aging ingredients in a daily skincare regimen, outside of sunscreen.

Directions

Retinoid products, like retinols, are best used at night because they are photo-inactivated, meaning direct sunlight will break them down and make them less effective. Medical grade retinols provide the best outcomes and are generally formulated with anti-inflammatories to lessen skin irritation. Newer formulations have controlled delivery systems, peptides and other anti-aging benefits as well. Use of zinc or titanium based sunscreen is mandatory with retinol use and moisturizers can help with any dryness or irritation.

When bringing retinol into your skincare regimen, start slow, or with lower percentages like a .25 percent. Ideally you want to work up to every night use and depending on your skin sensitivity, this process can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks. Be patient and diligent with your skincare regimen and you will see results.
